How Haiti Changed Me

When I was asked what I was going to take away from this trip many things came to mind, the 90 degree heat, digging what seemed like a never ending pit, or maybe how friendly the people were. All of those things I found were very impactful on me but not as much as the topic that I’m going to write about. Ironically it started with a game of soccer (I still don’t have the heart to call it football). Sports has a way to create bonds. I bonded with a bunch of the local kids playing a sport that I have never ever attempted to play before. Regardless, I had the time of my life! We got caught up in the moment and before we knew it the game was tied 2-2. This is what most kids dreamed about. Who’s going to kick the winning goal? Just as quick as it started, it ended just as quickly when Sandra announced it was time for dinner. Since the kids came and did yoga they got to eat a free meal in the compound. I grew up playing many pickup games of many different sports, but I can honestly say this is the only game I’ve played in that has ended in a tie. It didn’t make sense to me at first but then it hit me. This could be the only meal these kids will eat that day. Yes, they loved the game but unlike me growing up, they didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. It made me reflect on my childhood. I would stay outside and play. Sometimes I was so caught up in the action that I would miss mealtime. It wasn’t a big deal to me because I knew that I had a meal later on. These kids made me very appreciative for what I have. They taught me that sports can be a way of reaching across cultural divides and forming a bond. But, as much fun as it is to play a game and compete to win, the basic necessities (like food) are more important. I’m very appreciative that I was able to go on this trip. It made me grateful for everything that I have. Haiti has a special place in my heart. I would describe this as a “life changing experience.” I look forward to returning to Haiti in two years as an intern for the next class.
